Negotiating Across Cultures

"; print "Scenario 1

"; print "    You are the head of a very large and productive auto manufacturing company that is located in the US. Your company has decided to enter into negotiations with an equally large auto manufacturing company, located in China, with hopes of designing the ultimate “smart car”. The development and production of this new “smart car” would provide innumerable benefits to both your company and theirs. However, you are well aware that this particular company has already been made an offer to participate in a similar project by at least one other American auto company. Thus, you must see to it that the negotiations go as smoothly as possible. Five Chinese businessmen, having never before traveled outside their native country, will be arriving in the US, and it is your job to plan their itinerary. They will be staying for two full days, not including trips back and forth from the airport (i.e. their flight arrives Sunday night and leaves Wednesday morning).
Using the space below, describe the various activities in which your visitors will partake during their stay. Try to be as specific as possible, making sure to note 1) how much time will be spent per activity (i.e. three hours at restaurant A), 2) at what point in the week the activity will occur (i.e. Tuesday), and 3) whether or not there will be any free time (and when it will occur). Alongside each activity, 4) briefly state the purpose that activity will be expected to fulfill or why you chose to include that activity instead of another one (i.e. getting acquainted). Also include 5) how long the formal negotiation session will last and when it will take place. Keep in mind that the activities you choose will affect how well the negotiations proceed, so careful and thoughtful planning is of utmost importance.
